Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Claude for Content Research
Before any caption or script gets written, someone has to answer a duller question first: what's already been said, what's trending, what's the competitor actually doing. That's a different job from writing — and a different tool usually wins at it.
Perplexity — for "what's actually happening right now"
Its whole design is built around live search with cited sources, which makes it the right tool for anything time-sensitive — what a competitor posted this week, what's trending in your industry today, whether a claim you want to make is still accurate. The citations also mean you can actually check the source instead of trusting a confident-sounding paragraph.
ChatGPT and Claude — for turning research into a plan
Neither is built for live search the way Perplexity is, but both are stronger at the next step: taking a pile of research and turning it into an actual content angle, a calendar structure, or a comparison of options. Claude tends to hold a long research session together better without losing the thread of what was already covered; ChatGPT is often faster at generating a wide spread of angle options to choose from.
The mistake worth naming
Using any of these as a single source of truth is the actual risk — general-purpose chat models can state something confidently and be wrong, especially about anything recent or narrow enough that it's not well covered in what they were trained on. Research done this way still needs a human check before it shapes a content decision, particularly anything involving numbers, dates, or competitor claims.
A workflow that holds up
Start time-sensitive or fact-based questions in Perplexity, where the sources are visible. Move to ChatGPT or Claude once you have real material to work with and need help shaping it into angles, an outline, or a calendar. Treat the output of either stage as a draft to verify, not a finished answer.
